So far we’ve been good at measuring volume: clicks, visits, impressions, registrations, etc. We have also been really good at measuring velocity: time on page, click-through rate and so on. What Big Data can add to the picture is really very simple -- it adds a measure of value. So that next time a goal for a webinar would be not to get 1,000 registrations, but to attribute to say $1 million in revenue.
Long-Tail Keywords – specific keywords usually with 3-7 individual words in a phrase. They are highly targeted and MUCH easier to rank for than broad keywords (all mine are long-tail). The lower your domain authority (check using OSE), the less competitive (more long-tail) your keywords should be. If you can get more specific and the keyword still shows up in Google Autocomplete, Moz Keyword Explorer and other keyword tools… choose the SPECIFIC one.

What metrics would we put in place?  Clearly some level of revenue metric.  Probably we’d look at some sort of lead quality metric.  What about the nurturing programs that marketing conducts?  How would we measure those?  What about the other marketing deliverables used to support sales—clearly we don’t want to incent people on  quantity, but we do want to look at some sort of metric around good quality collateral that really helps sales and is meaningful to customers.

The phrase, "Affiliates are an extended sales force for your business", which is often used to explain affiliate marketing, is not completely accurate. The primary difference between the two is that affiliate marketers provide little if any influence on a possible prospect in the conversion process once that prospect is directed to the advertiser's website. The sales team of the advertiser, however, does have the control and influence up to the point where the prospect either a) signs the contract, or b) completes the purchase.
