As with many aspects of Web monetization, the exact strategies will vary from site to site. There’s no universally superior affiliate marketing offer or merchant. There are, however, some general guidelines on factors to consider when evaluating potential affiliate marketing offers. We’ll dive into several of these below. We’re using screenshots from ShareASale throughout this article to illustrate the process, but the tasks and terms will be generally similar across the major affiliate marketing networks.
To succeed in any field of effort, it will take some sort of education to gain the knowledge you need to make it work. However, you don’t need a college education to do this. Think about this little fact…How many professors in college have actually ran their own business? How many of them have developed their own products? How many have had success in marketing? I have taken college courses in Marketing and I did not have any professor or instructor who had real world business experience. If you want to learn the theory behind marketing philosophies, then go ahead and make the investment in time and money. However, the best way to learn this process is from people who have actually done it, maybe even failed miserably and then figured out how it all works. It is like having to cross a mine field. Do you want to go out on your own, study under someone who never seen the mine field, or learn from some one who knows where the mines are located?
Products are now put in a category. The commission will be based on the category each product has been placed in whether or not the category is correct. For instance, I had a sale for a child riding toy tractor. Instead of it being in toys category which would have only earned me 3%, it was actually placed in lawn and garden category which I then actually earned 8% instead.

4. Sales incentives. Structure your commission rates so that you have additional margin to offer sales incentives. For example, perhaps you are launching a new product line and you want affiliates to focus their marketing efforts on it. If you have room in your commission structure, you can offer a temporary increase — or perhaps sales bonuses — for hitting established revenue targets. This isn't about off-the-shelf solutions. You need to really convey something illustrious and beautiful, then fill it with incredible MVP content. Over time, this will become a thriving hotbed of activity for you, where people will come by and check-in repeatedly to see what you're talking about and what value you're delivering. Keep in mind that this won't happen quickly. It will take years. Yes, I said years.
In all our jobs, whether sales, marketing, or whatever, there are lots of things that are outside our control. That doesn’t take away from our accountability to achieve results, and sometimes we just have to suck it up. I really do think marketing should be accountable for sales/revenue. Maybe the specific metrics might be different. Where a sales person might be accountable for revenue from a territory, a marketing person might be accountable for a product line, for overall revenue, for a market segment, or something else.

Web 2.0 platforms have also opened affiliate marketing channels to personal bloggers, writers, and independent website owners.
