Developing an effective commission plan can be a difficult task. In fact, according to research by Anne Coughlan, professor at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, there is no single “best” compensation plan. You must consider many variables when designing your plan; you must incorporate the profit margins of your products, the goals of your company and the needs of marketing professionals in that plan. A well-designed commission program should be fair to both the marketing individuals as well as the company providing the commissions.
First, the commission program must be cost neutral to current spending–at plan. That is, what I’m spending for marketing people today, would be the same I would spend for them under a commission plan–at plan. (That’s the way we design compensation program for sales people, let’s do the same with marketing.). Presumably, we would take the current “budget” for marketing people and reallocate it, some level of fixed base pay and some level of variable–commission based pay. If marketing achieved their goals, they would earn the full amount–base plus the commission. If they failed to achieve their goals, they would receive base plus whatever commission they earned. If they overachieved, they would earn more—perhaps with accelerators. All of this is just like sales, except it would be funded out of the marketing budget, not sales.
A commission-based advisor derives his income from selling investment products, such as mutual funds and annuities, and conducting transactions with the client's money. An advisor who is compensated in this manner can increase his income by selling products that offer higher commissions, such as annuities or universal life insurance, and moving the client's money around more frequently.
In the 2000s, with more and more Internet users and the birth of iPhone, customers started searching products and making decisions about their needs online first, instead of consulting a salesperson, which created a new problem for the marketing department of a company. In addition, a survey in 2000 in the United Kingdom found that most retailers had not registered their own domain address. These problems made marketers find the digital ways for market development.

Fantastic list, thank you! I’m curious about the Amazon Affiliate arrangement. When a person clicks through your site to amazon, but chooses NOT to buy. They close the link and then leave for an hour. When they come back….they go directly to the Amazon site WITHOUT going through your site. Do you still get credit? Amazon somehow knows the person went to your site first?

Without going into a long story about commission planning, let me just say, the job of marketing is not changing. Marketing has always been accountable to work with sales in supporting revenue generation and growth. So we aren’t changing the job — all we are doing is clarifying the goals and putting earnings at risk. I did say, and do mean (at least for B2B) that marketing is repsonisble to support sales–meaning both the sales function and revenue generation in general, but I didn’t mean that was it’s only responsibility of marketing. There are many other function that marketing is responsible for, that could include product marketing and other functions. Having made that disclaimer, you raise several other interesting points, I’ll kind of react randomly.

I have to agree, when starting an affiliate site, you are putting up a huge investment, effort, money, and time, then if it is not bad enough, on top of that pit, earn less then 8% commission from you know who, and to insult you even more, give you a 24hr window, then you know who get a free sale from all your hard work when that person did not buy within 24hr, and to be honest, getting any site off the ground really blows, as you normally have to fight google all the way up the hill, which can take weeks, or even months just to find out if what you have done was a complete waste of effort, time, and money. As long as you got the money, and put up a quality site with quality content, then it may pay off in a few years, but how much money did one invest before getting into the black, all while the ceos are laughing at you for promoting them just to give you almost nothing in return for you hard work, and with a 24hr cookie.

David, thanks for the comment. Without meaning to be nasty, the logic might be applied equally well to manufacturing. Since the jobs of marketing and sales are to sell the products we make, one might then say marketing and sales should report to manufacturing. Every organization and every person has to execute the company strategies and priorities. We need to recognize, we don’t exist alone, but are dependent on working with people in other functions. We are most effective when we coordinate and collaborate across functions.
